Visits of National Defence College Team, New Delhi to IJIRA

A team of 15 members led Mr. S. C. Mohanty, AVSM, SDS (Army-III), visited IJIRA on 19th March 2018. It was the 58th tour to West Bengal for study on Economic Security by NDC. Dr. U. S .Sarma, Director, IJIRA welcomed the delegation. An interactive meeting was organized in the IJIRA Conference Hall where Director, Deputy Director and the Scientists were present.A brief presentation was made before the team on various activities of IJIRA and its future endeavours.

Visit of Hon’ble union Minister of Textiles, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani to 27th Technological Conference of IJIRA

The 27th Technological Conference of IJIRA, held on 28th February 2018, was inaugurated by Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, Hon’ble Minister of Texttiles and Information & Broadcasting, Govt. Of India. This is first time in the history of IJIRA that Textiles Minister had inaugurated the Technological Conference. A book published by IJIRA on its 80 years of dedicated research to the nation was also released during the inaugural session by the Hon’ble Union Minister. She had also inaugurated the, “Training –cum-Incubation centre for women preneurs”, to manufacture Jute Based Sanitory Napkin, the technology developed by IJIRA which is a woman centric employment opportunity as mentioned by her. An MoU was signed between Aakar innovations, Mumbai and IJIRA in the presense of the Hon’ble Minister, with regard to collaboration on Sanitory Napkin technology. She had also visited the jute-composite unit and pilot plant for jute processing. Hon’ble Minister had appreciated various technologies developed by IJIRA, viz., Innovative retting process by microbial consortium, “IJIRA-SUBHRA” which reduces the retting time substantially from the conventional one and drudgery of the jute farmers and also increases the output grade of retted jute. The standard procedure for Calibration of Moisture Meter was the point of interest and she had suggested coordinating with cotton Corporation on India towards troubleshooting with regard to moisture content in cotton as it is being done successfully in jute. She had also complemented on the accredited laboratories of IJIRA, both Chemical and Physical. Nonetheless, she had appreciated the decoration of IJIRA Auditorium where various jute based products were used, which showed IJIRA is also advancing in jute diversification. Hon’ble Minister had Interactive session with all the scientists of IJIRA followed by interaction with industry.

Visits of Miss World Team 2017 to IJIRA

The visit of Miss World 2017 Team, Beauty with a purpose, adds another feather to the hat of IJIRA. Miss World 2017 Miss Manushi Chillar and the entire team visited IJIRA on 2nd February and tried their hands in the process of manufacturing the Sanitary Pads made of Jute pulp, step by step. She has appreciated and promoted IJIRA developed technology of jute based Sanitary Napkins as the safest and hygienic way for the women of rural India. She had also visited the Jute-Composite plant and was shown keen interest to see various diversified products made of jute composites.

A team of 13 officials from the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) of the Government of The People’s Republic of Bangladesh visited IJIRA on 20 March 2017. Director, Dr. U. S. Sarma, welcomed the team.  Director, IJIRA, in his welcoming address expressed that by exchanging informations with such delegations, scientists, newsletters/periodicals and other publications from the both the countries will be beneficial to  both the countries.  A presentation was made before the BD delegates on various research activities of IJIRA. BD team informed that Bangladesh University of Technology (BUET) is carrying out a study in Bangladesh, on application of Jute Geotextiles.

Thereafter, there was a question-answer session, in which the BD team wanted to know about the details of 580 gm jute bags, recently developed by IJIRA. They showed keen interest in jute stick and oil free spinning projects.

Director asked whether Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) could sign an MoU with India during the ensuing ‘Textiles India 2017’ an International Mega Event, being held from 30 June to 02 July 2017 at Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Gujrat, which will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, where jute producers, exporters and buyers all will gather. IJIRA and BJRI could sign an MoU for a joint strategy to fight against synthetics. Director informed the delegates that he has requested Director General, BJRI for his participation.

After the meeting in the Conference Room, the team was taken to Pilot Plant, Soil Testing Laboratory and Exhibition Room where various displayed products were shown. The team appreciated for such an excellent institute like IJIRA which is run with the support of Govt. and industry.

At the conclusion of the meeting head of the BD delegates expressed their gratitude for conducting a very nice meeting and visit to the institute.

Scopes of Jute Geotextiles for the Stabilization of Over Burden (OB) Dumps of Coal Mines

Methods of coal mining, scenario of coal industry and formation method of over-burden dump had been discussed. Reasons of dump soil erosion and remedial measures had been explained. Efficacy of Jute Geotextiles on OB Dump protection had also been discussed. It was informed that Northern Coal Fields Co. Ltd. (NCL) has numbers of unstable OB Dump and they are interested to apply JGT technology for the protection of the dumps.     

Association Mapping for Stem Rot Disease Resistance in Jute Plant

Biochemical Softening of Hard Root Cuttings of Jute Fibre for Better Utilization

The presentation was delivered on efficacy and advantages of using biochemical softening of hard root cuttings of jute fibre. Floor level performance of three jute mills using the technology had also been discussed. It has informed that 10 % - 15% hard root cuttings may be applied successfully on existing batches of sacking quality without compromising quality and performance. Thus the batch cost will reduce substantially.    

Standard Methods for Inspection of B. Twill Jute Bag Quality (IS 16186:2014, Amendment 1)

Detailed methodology of inspection of B. Twill jute bags and criteria for conformity had been discussed elaborately. Various stages of inspection of B. Twill jute bags; sampling criteria, selection of bags, assessment of fabric & bag fault, measurement of physical properties, determination of breaking strength, etc had also been discussed. The present facilities of IJIRA as well as IJIRA’s experience in jute bag inspection were informed.
