Ball Bursting Strength Tester

IJIRA has developed a new strength assessment method called as Ball Bursting Strength Test Method for jute fabric and jute bag seam strength test. This test gives strength values applying multi directional force to the fabric and seam which is close to the practical load application situation on jute fabric or bag.

Jute B Twill fabrics are used for manufacturing jute nags which mainly reused for packing food grains like paddy, rice and wheat in India. Those bags should not break during use. Hence jute B Twill bags and their fabrics are tested by IS 1969 (Part -1): 2018, Tensile properties of fabrics – Part 1 Determination of maximum force and elongation at maximum force using the strip method (fourth revision)standard which is a ravelled strip test method to conform required tensile strength mentioned in IS 16186 : 2014 (amendments as on date). This method needs to prepare samples with perfect size as well as proper ravelling. Lots of samples are tested during inspection of a lot which involves expert man power to prepare samples for testing and to test them as per standard. Moreover two sets of samples are required (warpway and weftway) for assessing the quality of jute bag fabric. A new method of Ball Bursting test can be used as an alternate method of strength test to assess fabric strength as well as jute bag seam strength easily and quickly.
Commercialization Status:
First commercial model is developed after several tests and correlation done between Strip strength and Ball bursting strength test results. It has been ordered by Gloster Ltd.
Formulation of new BIS standard is in progress.
Patents:
The patent for this technology is under process (Patent Application No. 201831038353). Also, one paper has been published in journal of Natural Fibres in December 2021 (DOI: 10.1080/15440478.2021.2009393).
