Jute and Agro-waste based Organic Agromulch for Sustainable development

In Short:

The concept is to produce high valued horticulture crops using hybrid jute and other agro-waste based agrotextiles so as to eliminate use of plastic mulch in agriculture sector and reduce use of wedicides and herbicides for adoption of sustainable farming practices.

IJIRA has developed hybrid organic agro-mulch having varying proportions of jute waste and unutilized/waste coarser wool with different areal density to bring down the cost of agro-mulch as close to poly mulch as possible.

In Detail:

In India, the area under mulching covers around 20 million hectares. According to ICAR-IIFSR, mulching has been adopted by approximately 5 million farmers in India.

Although a variety of materials are available as mulch, plastic mulch is primarily among the highly consumed plastic products in most crop production systems. A growing concern is that plastic mulches are never completely removed from a field, leaving remnants which remain in soil for decades. In China, long term use of plastic film mulches has resulted in an estimated accumulation of 50–260 kg hm-2 of residual plastics in topsoil (0–20 cm), which can inhibit plant growth. The usage of poly-mulch has some negative issues, such as rising soil temperature; build up of termites on the root zone, non-biodegradable and disposal issues. In India, it has been estimated that expenditure incurred as labour cost for complete removal of plastic mulch is Rs. 2/m2

For the reduction of price and making it competitive to plastic mulch as close as possible, IJIRA has developed hybrid organic nonwoven agromulches using varying proportions of jute waste and unutilized coarse wool with varying areal densities. IJIRA is in the process of expanding field trials for variety of agricultural products in different agro-climatic zones to find out techno-economic viability of agro-produce and farmers’ benefit so that in long runs the products find sustainable and justifiable market.

Commercialization Status:

The developed organic hybrid low cost agro mulch are being field trial on different horticultural corps under different climatic conditions in three states. The preliminary results of field trials of agro mulch viz-a-viz plastic mulch are encouraging.
